Elevate Your Therapy Practice: A Comprehensive Marketing Checklist
Learn about a simple way to get started with SEO.
As a therapist, you’re not just a healer; you’re also a business owner. You’re passionate about helping people, and you want to reach more individuals who need your expertise. But, when it comes to marketing, I get it—it can feel overwhelming. SEO, digital marketing, and tech jargon can make you want to close your laptop and just focus on doing what you love: therapy.
But here's the thing—marketing your practice effectively doesn't need to be complicated or out of your wheelhouse. In fact, it can be streamlined and manageable, even if you’re starting from scratch. So, let’s break it down into simple, actionable steps that will help your practice stand out and attract the clients who need you most.
1. Build a Strong Online Presence
Your website is your digital storefront. It’s where potential clients learn about your services and decide whether you're the right fit for them.
Create a Professional Website:
Start with clear service pages that dive deep into your specialties. For example, if you specialize in EMDR or trauma therapy, explain how these modalities work, why they are effective, and who they help. Think about writing **800-1000 words** per service page (yes, really!). These pages are key for SEO and for building trust with clients.
Pro Tip: Use language your ideal clients are searching for—terms like “EMDR Therapy in [your city],” “Trauma Therapy for [specific issue]” will help them find you more easily.
Blog Regularly:
Share valuable, client-centered content that educates, informs, and offers helpful resources. Blogging is essential in SEO—it’s how you build authority and relevance in the digital space. By posting regularly, you’re showing Google that your website is up-to-date and helpful.
Pro Tip*: For every service page, aim for at least one cornerstone blog post (around 3,000 words). Yes, that’s a lot of content, but think of it like an in-depth guide that answers all the questions your potential clients might have.
Local SEO and Keywords:
Local SEO and Keywords is essential for any therapy practice. Include your office address in the footer of your website to boost local visibility. For example, targeting phrases like "Trauma Therapy in [City Name]" or “Anxiety Treatment in [State]” can help you stand out.
Pro Tip: Be careful of the common “near me” search. These are highly competitive and best tackled after 6+ months of consistent SEO work. Focus on longer-tail keywords like “Complex Trauma Therapy in Dallas” or “Anxiety Therapist in Monument, CO.”
2. Optimize Your Google My Business Profile
This is a no-brainer. Google My Business (GMB) is your digital business card.
Claim and optimize your profile to ensure you show up in local searches. This includes adding your business hours, services, and a brief description of your therapy practice.
You can also post blogs on your GMB profile, receive reviews from professional peers (more on this shortly), and engage with potential clients right from the search results.
Pro Tip: Have a clear call-to-action (CTA) in your GMB description. Something like, “Click to schedule a free consultation with me today!”
3. Network Strategically
Networking isn’t just about meeting people in person. It’s about creating meaningful connections in person and online.
Traditional Networking:
Don’t underestimate the power of in-person connections. Flyers and networking events can still work, especially if you partner with local clinics, healthcare professionals, or even gyms or wellness centers.
Digital Networking:
Guest Blogging: Collaborate with colleagues and other professionals to write guest posts for each other’s websites. This not only boosts your authority but builds backlinks to your website—an important aspect of SEO.
Social Media:
Sharing valuable content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok can help you connect with a broader audience. You don’t have to be everywhere, just where your ideal clients are. Repurpose social media content into blog posts to extend the reach of your work.
Pro Tip: While social media is helpful, it’s not essential. If you're not comfortable with it, that’s totally okay. Focus on SEO and website optimization as your main marketing strategy. However, especially for working with Gen Z and Millenials, it can be a great way to gain additional clients.
4. Leverage Online Directories
Directories like **Psychology Today** and **GoodTherapy** are excellent ways to expand your reach and increase visibility. Be sure your profiles are fully filled out with accurate, updated information and your specialties clearly defined.
Pro Tip: These platforms allow you to showcase your expertise and your availability, which can make it easier for clients to find you. It’s not an “either/or” situation—use directories alongside your website, not instead of it.
5.Content Creation Tips
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel—use your existing content in multiple formats to get more mileage out of your ideas.
Repurpose Content:
Repurpose social media posts, videos, and webinars into blog articles. Not only does this save you time, but it also helps with SEO by giving Google more content to crawl.
Pro Tip: Use your blog content to answer common questions or create “resource” posts (e.g., “Navigating Anxiety During the Holidays” or “The Best Self-Care Practices for Parents”).
6. Other Marketing Strategies to Consider
Email Marketing:
Build an email list and send regular newsletters. Keep it simple—offer value through seasonal content, helpful tips, or resources. You don’t need to go overboard, but you do need to stay consistent.
Pro Tip: Offer a free resource, like a downloadable guide to handling anxiety, to encourage sign-ups.
Paid Ads:
Consider using Google Ads or Facebook ads to help attract clients for special events or services. But remember—ads are a short-term strategy. For sustainable growth, focus on long-term SEO.
Client Reviews:
Asking clients for testimonials can be a gray area ethically. Instead, seek reviews from **other professionals** you work with or from peers who can vouch for your skills, professionalism, and character. This helps build trust and credibility.
Webinars and Workshops:
Host online workshops on relevant mental health topics. Not only do you educate your community, but you also position yourself as an expert in your field. And yes, these are great for SEO too!
7. Measure Your Efforts with Analytics
Tracking your progress is key. Set up **Google Analytics** and **Google Search Console** to monitor your website's traffic and see how your SEO is performing. This data will help you make informed decisions as you refine your strategy.
Quick Marketing Checklist: What Can You Do Today?
Ready to dive in without feeling overwhelmed? Here’s a simple checklist to get started:
1. Write a blog post that’s seasonally relevant—something like “Navigating Holiday Anxiety” or “How to Set Boundaries with Family Over the Holidays.”
2. Add your address to your website footer to improve your local SEO.
3. Reach out for guest blogging opportunities with a fellow therapist or professional.
4. Set up or optimize your Google My Business profile and post a recent blog there.
5. Ensure your website has a clear way for clients to contact you or schedule an appointment—a visible button or scheduling system is key.
Remember, the goal is to build consistency over time. Marketing doesn’t have to be perfect from day one. Just start small, stay consistent, and you’ll see the results.

Benefits of a Content Network Strategy
It all begins with an idea.
There are many ways we can create content for our business. While it’s essential to understand how to write effective content, that alone isn’t the most crucial element for SEO success. Blogging and content creation are vital for staying competitive in the SEO world, but having a strategic approach is even more important. You can’t effectively write content without a clear strategy. You need to consider your keywords and understand what your ideal clients are searching for. That’s where a content strategy network comes into play.
The Know, Like, and Trust Formula Lays the Groundwork
Let’s dive into the "Know, Like, Trust" formula, which is fundamental for establishing your online presence. First, we need to assert our knowledge as professionals. What makes us stand out? Who are we, and why are we considered experts in our field? Next, we focus on building likeability. This is achieved by creating engaging content that captures attention and provides value. The ultimate goal is to differentiate yourself from competitors and make your content compelling enough that people want to engage with it.
Lastly, we build trustworthiness. This involves demonstrating consistent results and meeting your audience’s needs, whether through a physical product, a guide, or a comprehensive coaching program. For instance, by the end of my 12-week coaching program, you’ll have a personalized and effective emotional regulation plan tailored to you. Technically, we build "Know, Like, Trust" through strategic linking, backlinking, analyzing time on page via Google Analytics, and ultimately achieving client conversions through various forms of content creation, whether through video or blogging.
Establishing Core Cornerstones
Cornerstone content is key to your websites branding. I know writing may not be your favorite past time and what I am about to tell you may make you hold your breath, but hear me out. Google has always prioritized written content over videos, ads, and other forms of marketing. if you have tried to break into social media, right now is the hardest time to market becaue the algortith is pushing things through at a snails pace, and because the content is more for entertainment, that knowledge many of the things we may want to do may not thrive on a social media platform. Writing always has and liekly will continue to be the cornerstone of boosting your SEO presence.
With that being said, here is the part where we continue to hold out breaths. What is cornerstone content. This is content that highlights our brand. So in the form of a landing page, it would be our core services. On my site, that would be my coaching packages, SEO services, and emotional regulation course. On yours it could be therapy for depression, Freeze dried candy packages, Coaching for Single moms, and so on. What it means in terms of blogs is detailed and descriptive blog posts on topics that your audience would be landing on your page for. For exmaple, mine would be Coaching for High achieving women, Mastering Emotional Regulation Course, and SEO For Beginniners, and so on. We would want to write blogs on these topics with 2000 to 3000 words. You can release your breath now.
Why Does the Blog Need to Be So Long?
Benefits:
Increased search engine visibility: Longer articles tend to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Deeper engagement: In-depth content encourages readers to spend more time on your site, reducing bounce rates.
More opportunities for internal linking: Longer articles allow for more internal links, improving website navigation and SEO.
Content repurposing: Longer articles can be broken down into smaller pieces for social media, email marketing, or other content formats.
Building trust and credibility: Comprehensive content positions you as an expert in your niche.
Cornerstone Blog Examples:
Overcoming Procrastination: From Paralyzed to Productive
Building Resilience: Bounce Back Stronger Than Ever
Mastering Self-Care: Prioritizing Your Well-being
The Art of Setting Boundaries: Reclaim Your Time and Energy
Cultivating Gratitude: Finding Joy in the Everyday

Managing Anxiety: Practical Tools for Calmness
Enhancing Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and Managing Your Emotions
Navigating Difficult Conversations: Effective Communication Strategies
Finding Your Passion: Igniting Your Inner Fire
Balancing Work and Family: Creating Harmony in Your Life
Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Believing in Your Abilities
Building Self-Confidence: Empowering Yourself
The Power of Mindset: Shifting Your Perspective

Work-Life Balance for Entrepreneurs: Finding Fulfillment
Leadership Development: Inspiring and Empowering Others
Financial Freedom: Achieving Your Money Goals
Time Management Mastery: Maximizing Productivity
The Importance of Self-Reflection: Personal Growth and Development
Creating Supporting Blogs
After you create your signature 3 cornerstone blogs, you would then need to create some support blogs. These are around 800 to 1000 words long. Think about something you could whip up in an hour or two. Support blogs are blogs that split off into topics that would dive more deeply into a topic. I would then link this back to the cornerstone to create more ways for Google to crawl my website and see what my focus is.
Benefits:
Enhancing the depth and breadth of your content.
Boosting SEO through strategic internal linking.
Addressing various subtopics related to your core cornerstones.
Examples of Cornerstones with Supporting Blogs:
Cornerstone: A Comprehensive Guide to Emotional Regulation
Supporting Blog: 5 DBT Skills to Help You Manage Your Emotions
Supporting Blog: Reasons You Struggle to Manage Your Emotional Reactions
Supporting Blog: An Open Letter to the Woman Who has Been Called Too Much Her Whole Life.
Leveraging Local SEO Blogs
Its important when creating content to leverage SEO in the areas you expect to find your ideal clients. That means adding in keywords that are location specific and adding in zip codes and locations into your alternative text.
Benefits:
Improving local search visibility and relevance.
Attracting a regional audience with tailored content.
Enhancing engagement with local communities.
Examples of Location Specific Blogs:
SEO in Denver, Colorado
SEO Support for Black Business Owners in the Springs
Colorado Mountain Towns SEO
Leveraging Nature in Colorado Springs for Emotional Regulation
How a Hike up Palmar Lake Gave me Clarity in My Life
Living in the Mile High City Isolated Me More Than I Could Imagine
Improving SEO Through Strategic Linking
So what makes a content network effective next is the internal linking stratetgy. Its important for Google to be able to crawl your website so it knows who to place your content in front of. With that being said, we have to internally link your content to other content within a site. That means I would find keyword rich anchor text like “ SEO in Denver”, or “ Comprehensive Guide to Emotional Regulation”, and I would like to another blog or landing page thats related on my website. So that means all of your supporting blogs should be connected to your cornerstone blog, and one another. This makes a clear path for Google. Be warned, do not create cyclical links. What that means is I would link this blog to itself as it goes no where and it would damage your SEO. Googles bots need a path from one path to the other, not from one page to itself, so beware of that. Lastly, make sure your internal links are opening within the website. As this is best SEO practice. The only time a link should open in a separate window is with external links.
Benefits:
Enhancing page authority and relevance.
Guiding users through related content seamlessly.
Boosting overall site SEO performance.
Building Brand Authority and Trust
A content network significantly enhances brand positioning by establishing credibility within your niche, crafting a unified brand message, and fostering trust through consistent, high-quality content. This strategic approach strengthens your brand's authority and resonance with your target audience.

The Foundation of SEO: Mastering Keyword Research for Optimal Search Rankings
SEO doesn’t need to be complicated, and keyword research doesn’t have to feel like an uphill battle. Lets’s get started with the basics of keyword research together.
Regarding Search Engine Optimization (SEO), keyword research is the cornerstone of any effective strategy. This foundational step determines how people will find your website and how Google will recognize and rank your content. Before diving into writing compelling content or optimizing your website, it's crucial to establish a solid keyword strategy. In this guide, we'll explore the essentials of keyword research, common mistakes to avoid, and techniques to help you achieve better search engine rankings.
Understanding Keyword Research
Keyword research is identifying and analyzing the terms and phrases people use to search for information related to their niche. This process involves understanding what keywords you have a realistic chance of ranking for and how to strategically use them to drive targeted traffic to your site.
The Importance of Keyword Research
Keyword research is not just about finding popular search terms. It's about understanding your audience's needs and aligning your content to meet those needs. Effective keyword research helps you:
Identify Your Target Audience: Discover what potential clients or customers are searching for, which can help you tailor your content to address their specific needs and interests.
Understand Search Intent: Recognize the intent behind search queries, whether users are looking for information, services, or products.
Optimize Content: Ensure that your content is aligned with the keywords your audience is using, which improves the chances of your site ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Common Keyword Research Mistakes to Avoid
A common mistake in keyword research is attempting to rank for highly competitive, short-tail keywords right from the start. These keywords are often dominated by established sites with high domain authority. Instead, focus on a strategic approach that involves:
Avoiding High Competition Keywords: Short-tail keywords like "mental health therapy" or "life coach" are highly competitive and challenging for newcomers. These keywords often have a lot of search volume but are dominated by well-established websites. Instead, focus on less competitive, long-tail keywords.
Ignoring Long-Tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords are longer phrases with lower search volume but less competition. For instance, instead of "therapy," target "therapy for anxiety in Denver." These keywords are often more specific and can attract highly targeted traffic.
Comprehensive Keyword Research Strategy
1. Identifying Baseline Keywords
Before diving into detailed keyword research, start by identifying baseline keywords. These are the terms and phrases that are most relevant to your niche and audience. To find these:
List Common Questions: Reflect on the questions your clients frequently ask. For example, if you're a mental health therapist, common questions might include "How can I manage anxiety?" or "What are effective therapy techniques?"
Use Keyword Research Tools: Utilize tools like Google Keyword Planner, Answer the Public, and SEMrush to identify relevant keywords and analyze their search volume and competition.
2. Conducting Keyword Research
Once you have your baseline keywords, the next step is to conduct in-depth keyword research:
Keyword Difficulty Analysis: Assess how difficult it is to rank for specific keywords. Tools like Moz's Keyword Explorer and Ahrefs can provide insights into keyword difficulty. Focus on medium to low-difficulty keywords, especially if you're just starting.
Analyzing Search Volume: Determine the search volume for each keyword. Higher search volume indicates more potential traffic but often comes with increased competition. Balance high and low-volume keywords in your strategy.
Examining Search Intent: Understand the intent behind the searches. Are users looking for information, making a purchase, or seeking a service? Tailor your content to match the search intent.
Expanding Your Keyword Strategy
1. Long-Tail Keywords
Long-tail keywords are phrases with three or more words that are highly specific. They often have lower search volume but are easier to rank for and attract more targeted traffic. For example:
Example 1: Instead of targeting "dietitian," aim for "dietitian for managing diabetes in Denver."
Example 2: If you're offering therapy services, use "online therapy for anxiety in Colorado Springs."
2. Location-Specific Keywords
For businesses with a local focus, location-specific keywords are essential. These keywords help you attract clients or customers from specific geographic areas. Examples include:
"Therapist in Monument, CO"
"Counseling services in Colorado Springs"
3. Competitor Research
Analyzing competitors can provide valuable insights into keyword opportunities. Identify who your main competitors are, and:
Analyze Their Keywords: Use tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs to see which keywords your competitors are ranking for. Look for gaps or opportunities that you can leverage.
Evaluate Their Content: Assess the type of content they produce and their SEO strategy. This can help you understand what works in your niche and how you can differentiate yourself.
Implementing Keywords on Your Website
1. On-Page Optimization
Once you've identified your target keywords, it's crucial to optimize your website effectively:
Focus Keywords in Headings: Use focus keywords in your page titles and headings (H1, H2, H3) to signal relevance to search engines. For instance, a page about "Emotional Regulation Skills" should have that phrase in its heading.
Incorporate Keywords Naturally: Integrate keywords into your content in a natural, reader-friendly way. Avoid keyword stuffing, which can negatively impact user experience and SEO. Instead, aim for a natural flow where keywords fit contextually.
2. Metadata and Alt Text
Metadata and alt text are important for SEO:
Meta Titles and Descriptions: Include focus keywords in your meta titles and descriptions. This helps search engines understand the content of your pages and improves click-through rates from search results.
Alt Text for Images: Use descriptive alt text for images, incorporating relevant keywords where appropriate. This enhances accessibility and can contribute to search rankings.
3. Local SEO Considerations
For businesses targeting local clients, local SEO is critical:
Local Keywords: Use location-specific keywords throughout your content. This includes city names, neighborhoods, and other relevant local terms.
Google My Business: Create and optimize a Google My Business listing. This helps your business appear in local search results and Google Maps.
Local Citations: Ensure your business information is consistent across local directories and citation sites.
Measuring and Adjusting Your Keyword Strategy
1. Track Your Rankings
Regularly monitor your keyword rankings to assess the effectiveness of your strategy. Tools like Google Search Console and SEMrush provide insights into how your site is performing for various keywords.
2. Analyze Traffic and Conversions
Beyond rankings, track how well your keywords are driving traffic and conversions. Use Google Analytics to measure metrics like bounce rate, time on page, and conversion rates.
3. Adjust and Refine
Based on your analysis, adjust your keyword strategy as needed. Focus on refining your approach, optimizing underperforming pages, and exploring new keyword opportunities.
Takeaways and Next Steps
Keyword research is a vital component of a successful SEO strategy. By understanding the basics of keyword research, avoiding common mistakes, and implementing a well-thought-out keyword strategy, you can improve your search engine rankings and attract more targeted traffic to your website. Remember, SEO is an ongoing process, and staying up-to-date with best practices and trends will help you maintain and improve your search visibility over time.

A Black Therapist, Transformation Coach, and SEO Specialist’s Comprehensive Approach to SEO in 2024
Get comprehensive Guidance and stay in the know of what SEO is, how you can begin to implement it, and what to expect for the future of SEO in 2024.
Starting SEO for the first time can be very daunting. When I was learning about SEO for the first time in 2019-2020, I was overwhelmed with the extent of knowledge on the internet. There is so much with so many technical terms; honestly, it felt like a blur. I was soon, however, whisked into the world of SEO through working with a company that did SEO for therapists. It was a great experience and I became extremely knowledgeable, building courses, training programs, webinars, etc. And, then it all came crashing down, and I had to leave my job because of a toxic workspace, being undervalued, and dismissed. I missed that job because the world of SEO while overwhelming is also empowering and exciting for business owners. It’s been on my mind since I left to continue doing SEO work, but with empty threats, and my fear of being taken out of the competition, I’ve let my knowledge and fear overtake me. Until I had an amazing past client of mine reach out and beg me to work with them. That relit my fire.
My Story with SEO: The Rise and the Betrayal
I have 4 years of expertise in getting results for therapists, coaches, moms, high achievers, consultants, and so on. I am very knowledgeable in SEO and I understand the trends so much so, that my previous job is profiting off of a ten-hour course I revamped right before I left. Unfortunately, I had to take a step back for my mental health, but I am back better than ever. Just like this stressor, SEO is a journey, and you learn and grow as you implement the changes you need for the algorithm, your audience, and your niche. It’s a slow process but a sustainable one. Google ads, affiliate marketing, and social media marketing are good options, but they are not the best. SEO has time and time again with time and effort been one of the most successful ways I have helped business owners rank locally, nationally, and internationally. If you are looking to get on top and build a sustainable strategy, you are in the right place. This guide will help you understand the essentials of SEO, set up realistic expectations, and understand the evolving landscape of SEO.
1. Understanding SEO Fundamentals
On-Page SEO:
Let’s understand SEO strategies. First and foremost, your biggest success with SEO is likely going to be with on-page SEO. What does that mean? It means creating high-quality content, such as a landing page for a service or a blog post. This includes adding links, headings, a clear call to action, an "other services" section, alt text for photos, and so on. This also includes meta descriptions and titles. These are necessary. One big factor that I have found time and time again that brings people to a site to stay is readability. That means writing within a 6th-9th grade level, even if you are a therapist or lawyer. We need to make sure we are writing palatable and layman terms information for our audience. Most people are not coming to us when they are calm—maybe if you are doing e-commerce or selling a product—but for those of you practicing law, counseling, consulting, and coaching, you are likely offering knowledge to people who may be stressed or anxious about their life or business. So, we need to ensure that we are being clear with our messaging, making it digestible. Lastly and most importantly, keywords are what draw people to our site. We need to make sure we are not shooting for the stars, but also not undercutting ourselves. We will discuss keyword research in a bit, but this is what helps make us competitive, long-tail versus short-tail SEO.
Off-Page SEO:
Off-page SEO, what a journey. Let’s not put the cart before the horse here. In the first few months of doing SEO, you are not going to do link-building as much. This is more of a "when I have the rankings I am looking for, I will begin focusing on backlinking options." You can do networking and connect with relevant directories, but make sure when doing this we are not doing all the things at once. Link building is a strategy where other websites link to your website. It's pretty simple but isn’t a quick or easy process. That means you have to reach out to businesses with relevant topics that can help build your authority. Something I will discuss in a different blog, but is crucial, is to never, ever buy backlinks. Scammy sites may link to you (like a porn site, for example, which is a real thing that happened to a client), or Google may find out and deem you as irrelevant. So be careful. Additionally, things that can be helpful, for example, if you are a coach or therapist, are to find directories that help by giving you a backlink and helping draw in additional clients.
Technical SEO:
Technical SEO can be rather scary—trust me, I’ve been there—but hear me out. Something simple you can do is make sure your site is accessible. One quick way to do that is to add text to your photos so that someone with a screen reader can have a comparable experience just like any able-bodied person. Additionally, on your website, you likely have a way to check for mobile optimization. We need to check and see for ourselves how our content shows up on mobile. I tend to work with Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace platforms only, and on each of these, there are ways to preview the mobile site. You may notice when doing this that the desktop version doesn’t always translate to the mobile version. Therefore, we need to check this during each edit we are doing on our site. It's good practice. Make sure the elements are where they need to be and make modifications as needed. While we would like to assume that our website will auto-adjust, I can tell you for certain it’s most likely going to require manual adjustments unless you have some code in your site that will do it for you, but most people don’t have that.
Keyword Research
Importance of Cultural and Environmental Relevance:
Keyword research is the cornerstone of SEO, and arguably the hardest part of developing an SEO strategy. When people come to work with me, it’s very easy to want to rank for the first few keywords you find or the “trendy” keywords that fit your niche. While it’s important to find keywords that help you with your ideal clients, you can’t just rank for any keyword. What do I mean? Here’s an example: if I were a trauma therapist, I wouldn’t rank for trauma therapy immediately in a region like Denver. Why? You are competing with every other trauma therapist that got there first. I am not saying don’t try; I am just saying don’t just rely on general, what's called, short-tail keywords. I’d say diversify your strategy. Let’s say EMDR for trauma or Cognitive Processing Therapy for trauma. If I were a coach, I wouldn’t rank you for life coaching. I would say emotional regulation coping skills would be the keyword. This strategy mixes using short-tail keywords like “trauma therapy” and long-tail keywords like “cognitive processing therapy for sexual assault” as your core strategy. Why? Because long-tail keywords can help you get a leg up on your competition.
Imagine this: if you were in a crowd of people wearing red and you thought to yourself, "I am going to wear red with green stripes." You might stick out a bit, but if I go inversely and wear green in the crowd of red with red stripes throughout my wardrobe, now I am still connected in some way to the group, but I am highlighting my differences and standing out from the crowd a bit more.
The same thing happens when I say I am a relationship coach. That’s great, but a lot of people are. What makes you stand out? From a cultural perspective, I would say I am a relationship coach who helps black women thrive, or I am a BIPOC relationship coach helping women step fully into their identity and find healthy and fulfilling relationships. Niching down makes me stand out. Now I have something more to offer than just relationships and advice.
Tools and Techniques:
I recommend understanding your niche better and then identifying more long tail keywords and maybe some short tail, just recognizing that the short tail being as competitive as they are will take more time to rank.
Long Tail Examples
EMDR Therapy for Trauma in Denver
This keyword targets a specific type of therapy (EMDR) within a specific region (Denver), making it more niche and less competitive.
Cognitive Processing Therapy for Sexual Assault Survivors
This focuses on a specific therapeutic approach for a particular audience, helping you reach individuals seeking this exact service.
Emotional Regulation Techniques for High-Achieving Women
By targeting a specific demographic (high-achieving women) with a particular need (emotional regulation techniques), this keyword helps you stand out.
Faith-Based Coaching for Moms Building Businesses
This keyword targets moms who are building businesses and prefer a faith-based approach, narrowing down the audience significantly.
SEO Strategies for Black Therapists in 2024
This keyword is highly specific, targeting a particular group (Black therapists) and a time frame (2024), making it more unique and relevant.
Short Tail Examples
Trauma Therapy
A broad keyword with high competition, but essential for identifying your general service area.
Another broad keyword that many coaches aim to rank for, making it highly competitive.

A broad keyword that can attract a wide audience, but is harder to rank for due to its general nature.
While slightly more niche, this keyword still covers a broad area and faces significant competition.

Content Optimization and Writing
Content optimization and writing are the secondary and most important parts of SEO optimization. First, we need to ensure our content resonates with our ideal clients. Let’s not write boring content. That means don’t write: "How to navigate dating apps." Why is that so bad? Okay, hear me out. It’s not inherently bad, but what is the content? Is it a how-to guide? Or can we spice it up and say "5 Lessons I’ve Learned from Dating Apps and How You Can Avoid Them." Now that catches my attention more as a consumer. How-tos can be helpful, but are they engaging? They could be, with the right content. But consider what your audience is seeking. If you need some ideas of what I mean, you can check out my blog, Black Bold and Transforming, which is an extension of my coaching business.
Get creative with your SEO Headings
For now, let’s get creative with our titles and make sure we have our focus keyword in our content. When you are writing content, do not focus on more than 2-3 keywords at a time. Keyword oversaturation is a thing. We also want to make sure as we are writing that we are incorporating keywords. That means adding them to headings (title), subheadings, sentences, meta descriptions, and photo alt text. Don’t just slap them on there like a band-aid, but as naturally as possible incorporate them. For example: “Today I want to talk to you all about addressing boundary setting and assertive communication.” Now that is relatively natural. Don’t do this though:
Incorrect Example: "Today I want to talk to you all about boundary setting and assertive communication, which are important for boundary setting and assertive communication in any relationship, especially when boundary setting and assertive communication are necessary."
AI and Content Creation for SEO
Lastly, part of the trends and forecasting I want to highlight is the use of AI. For my blog today, I did use AI, but this block wasn’t generated by AI. My outline was. I also used AI to grammar and flow check me after each paragraph I wrote. Why? Because I am a fan of making my life easier, and I encourage you to do the same. AI can help you incorporate keywords into your writing if you are unsure, and check your tone and flow if you’re worried about not connecting with your audience. AI can write blogs for you too, but what I don’t recommend is posting AI-generated content as Google will flag it. You still need a part of you in your content because you are what makes your business thrive. So be willing to breathe and use your thoughts, feelings, knowledge, and emotions to create high-quality content. Something I will do at times is voice record my content because talking is easier and then have AI write it, as it’s still me and my words. AI is just making it structured and more coherent.

Technical SEO
Ensuring Accessibility
Making your site accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, is crucial. It’s about more than just compliance; it’s about ensuring everyone can access your content. Simple steps like adding alt text to your photos can make a significant difference, allowing screen readers to describe your images to visually impaired users. This not only enhances the user experience but also helps with SEO.
Mobile Optimization
Ensuring your site performs well on mobile devices is crucial for reaching a wider audience. With so many people using their phones to browse the internet, a mobile-optimized site is non-negotiable. Platforms like Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace offer ways to preview and adjust your site for mobile viewing. Remember, your desktop version may not automatically translate well to mobile, so it’s essential to check and make manual adjustments if needed.
Core Web Vitals
Understanding and optimizing for Google’s Core Web Vitals is a must. These metrics focus on user experience aspects like load time, interactivity, and visual stability. By improving your Core Web Vitals, you enhance the user experience and boost your SEO performance. It might sound technical, but tackling these metrics one step at a time can make a big impact on your site's success.
Off-Page SEO: The Power of Backlinks
Backlinks are crucial for maintaining domain authority over time. We want people to notice your website and say, “Hey, this is a great website to link to.” So, we need to consider who would be good authorities to get backlinks from and how we want to do this. A good backlinking strategy is key.
You can do this through guest blogging and using platforms like Pitchbox and HARO. These are organic ways to build links healthily and helpfully for your website. Please never buy your backlinks, as you will quickly find how much they tear down your domain authority. You do not need a random link from an unknown company in India on your website because one scammy link can turn into a hundred real quick. Just be mindful about it.
Additionally, choosing to guest blog or using a backlink-building pitch service can help you build high-quality backlinks. You need quite a few backlinks to help with domain authority; however, the quality far outranks the quantity.
Local SEO: Building Authority in Your Community
Local SEO is crucial when establishing your strategy. I would much rather you focus on terms like "transformation coach in Denver" than "life coaches globally." Hey, I am a coach, and it differs from the restrictions that a therapist has. So I know that you can do national or international clientele. But right now, we need to think about building authority in the community before tackling short tail keywords nationally or internationally.
With that being said, one great ways to establish local authority is to build a Google Business Profile (previously Google My Business). This will help people know everything about your website possible. Now, what if I have an online business? I gotcha! Put your address on there to receive the verification, but make sure it's hidden and just note on the profile that this is a virtual business. Google is finicky about this, so that’s the best workaround I have so far.
Additionally, if you can get 3-5 people to rate your business and let people know about the work they have done with you, that’s a great way to navigate ratings. If you have a job where your ethics go against that and you cannot have clients do this from your push, then ask a pastor, a good friend, a mentor, and so on. It's an honest review, so no, they are not posing as a client.
SEO Analytics and Tools
Tracking Progress: Using tools like Google Analytics and Search Console is essential to monitor your SEO performance. These tools help you keep an eye on your website’s traffic, keyword rankings, and overall health.
Adjusting Strategies: It's all about tweaking your SEO strategies based on the data and feedback you get. These insights are gold, helping you understand what’s working and what needs improvement. For example, if you notice that certain keywords are driving more traffic, you can create more content around those topics. Conversely, if something isn’t working, you can pivot and try a different approach. Regularly reviewing your data ensures your SEO efforts stay effective and aligned with your goals.
Future Trends in SEO
AI and Machine Learning:
The impact of AI on search algorithms and content creation is huge. AI is getting smarter every day, which means search engines are better at understanding user intent and delivering relevant content. Embracing AI-driven tools can help you create more targeted and effective SEO strategies.
Voice Search Optimization:
With the rise of smart speakers and voice assistants, optimizing for voice search is becoming crucial. People use voice search differently than text search, often asking more conversational questions. Preparing your content to answer these questions directly can give you an edge in this growing area.
Video Content:
Incorporating video content into your strategy is a game-changer. Videos engage audiences more effectively, and search engines love them. By creating high-quality, relevant videos, you can improve your rankings and keep visitors on your site longer.
Forecasting SEO Trends for 2024:
Looking ahead, emerging trends and predictions for the SEO landscape include an increased focus on user experience, more personalized search results, and the continued importance of high-quality content. Staying ahead of these trends will help you maintain a competitive edge in the ever-evolving world of SEO.
User Experience (UX) and SEO
Your website should be an easy and enjoyable experience for your ideal clients so making sure your site navigation works well is key. Make sure you don’t have broken links or pages, as it can decrease page time, and cause people to jump off your site faster. Your website load times mustn’t be more than 3 seconds. You can check this by looking at this link.
Good Website Load Time Factors
Optimize Images: Use compressed images without sacrificing quality. Tools like TinyPNG or ImageOptim can help.
Minimize HTTP Requests: Reduce the number of elements on your page, such as images, scripts, and CSS files.
Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): Distribute your content across multiple servers worldwide to ensure faster delivery.
Enable Browser Caching: Allow visitors' browsers to store some data locally, so they don't have to reload the entire page every time.
Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML: Remove unnecessary characters from your code to reduce file size.
Choose a Reliable Hosting Provider: Ensure your host offers fast servers and good support.
By following these tips, you can improve your website's load time, leading to better user satisfaction and higher search engine rankings.
Special Section: SEO for Black Business Owners
As a black business owner, I've experienced firsthand the lack of support and representation in the SEO landscape. Many black business owners have shared that they sought me out because I could genuinely understand their unique perspective. I understand the importance of messaging and connecting with clients who may carry racial trauma from their personal experiences. When creating content, it’s crucial to integrate and consider the diverse cultures, ethnicities, and identities of your audience.
Community Engagement:
Partnering with other black business owners and connecting with supportive organizations is key. Starting and marketing your business shouldn't be a solo journey. There are people in your community who need your support and are looking for businesses like yours. The black community often faces isolation and mistrust when it comes to marketing services, so it's important to make your presence known and available to meet their needs. For example, if you offer braiding services, post about it in Facebook groups. If you provide transformation coaching for black women, address the specific struggles they face. Connect with your clients' pain points and show them you understand and empathize with their experiences.
Personal Stories and Client Successes:
One of my first black clients back in 2021 worked with black and brown communities in the Bronx, Bed-Stuy, and similar areas. We focused on identifying the specific stressors and struggles their clients faced when seeking therapy services. This led to pinpointing relevant keywords and creating resonant blog content. Over 8 months to a year, this client’s practice became so successful that their clinicians were fully booked, and I was brought on to continue writing and optimizing content to meet the growing demand. By 2024, this practice is still thriving, serving clients and providing a safe space for them to process their experiences.

An Open Letter to Business Owners Struggling to Write Content <3
It all begins with an idea.
So you’ve been told you have to write content for Google to recognize your website….
I feel you, some days are easier to write about our businesses than others. As a business owner, you have so much on your plate. Whether you are a solopenuer or a group, you have a lot to juggle. In today’s digital landscape, as an SEO specialist in Colorado what I have to say is this, Google has always prioritized high-quality human-written content above all else. Even if you want to do a podcast or YouTube video, Google will never rank it the way it ranks blog and landing page content. For some of us, we may write our own content and for others, we may be able to outsource it. I have seen firsthand how hiring a copywriter can alleviate so much stress from a business owner.
The Struggle is Real
I love to write, it’s a passion of mine. I’m sure if you have scoured my whole website you will see there is a decent amount of content present. I have always loved to write, but I also had some imposter syndrome about it growing up because I would always get criticized for not being eloquent enough. Granted, I have scaled up in life since high school, but still, those fears and core beliefs can haunt us. We may wonder what do I have to provide to our clients. The answer is more than you could ever know. There are people who want to hear your voice. Yet, we often hold ourselves back because of the fear of creating trendy and on-brand content. We may not have time because we have such a great vision for our business it’s hard to know what to prioritize. Like me, it could be a lack of writing skills or experience. Although I've been a copywriter for four years, I’ve definitely leveled up. People also find it a challenge to find the right tone and voice in their own content. This can reinforce the negative self-talk that tells us we have nothing to contribute so why bother?
The Power of Quality Content
You may be wondering yourself, why not just do off-page SEO to get rankings? Here is the thing you absolutely can. There are a lot of ranking factors that Google takes into consideration when trying to bring you up in the search results and off-page can work. However, time and time again in my own work, I have seen page optimization and content creation be the most effective. It helps because it builds that know-life and trust factor that people need to decide whether to choose your services or not. It helps to increase your website traffic abundantly. Plus it helps with brand reputation and credibility when people can land on your blogs and understand your voice and experiences better. Lastly, it’s a great way to do lead generation and customer acquisition. For example, with my brand, people consistently land on my website for my blog post, How to Have An Effective Mental Health Day, PT. 1 and PT. 2
The Solution: Outsourcing Content Creation
When time is tight and motivation is low, outsourcing content creation can be the solution you need to free up your time and reduce stress. Working with a professional content writer allows you to maintain a strong online presence without sacrificing the quality of your message or losing touch with your ideal clients.
Advantages of Hiring a Professional Content Writer
Outsourcing content creation to a professional comes with several significant advantages that can help you keep up with your content strategy while you focus on what you do best.
Time Savings and Increased Productivity
Content writing requires time, research, and strategy—all of which can be overwhelming when you’re already seeing clients, handling business tasks, and balancing personal obligations. By outsourcing, you’ll reclaim hours each week to refocus on your work and enjoy a better work-life balance. A skilled writer can provide consistency for your blog, website, or social media, keeping you visible and relevant to your audience.Expertise and Knowledge of Effective Content Strategies
Professional writers know how to create engaging, SEO-friendly content that attracts clients. They understand how to use keywords, craft appealing headlines, and present ideas in a way that resonates with your audience. This expertise means you’re not only getting words on a page, but also a well-thought-out strategy that enhances your brand and boosts your visibility online.Focus on Core Business Activities
Content creation is only one part of growing a practice. Outsourcing allows you to delegate this task so that you can focus on areas where you excel—whether that’s working with clients, developing new services, or taking a much-needed mental break. By hiring a content writer, you’re investing in your business’s success and ensuring that your primary activities don’t take a backseat.
How to Find the Right Content Writer
When you’re ready to bring a content writer on board, it’s essential to find someone who understands your unique voice, your practice’s needs, and your industry.
Tips for Finding a Qualified Content Writer
Start by looking for a writer with experience in healthcare or counseling-related content, as they’ll have a better understanding of the sensitivities and nuances involved. Ask for samples of their work and check reviews or testimonials to ensure they have a proven track record of delivering quality content. The Importance of Clear Communication and Expectations
Make sure you communicate your goals and expectations clearly with your writer. Define the tone, topics, and style you’d like, and let them know how often you’ll need content. This clarity upfront will lead to smoother communication and ensure that the content aligns with your brand voice and goals.Building a Long-Term Partnership
Look for a content writer who values a collaborative partnership. Building a long-term relationship with someone who understands your brand can lead to a consistent voice across your content and save you from having to repeatedly onboard new writers. This continuity helps build trust with your audience over time.
