Why Does it Matter to Support Black Podcasters?

It is important for individuals to support black and BIPOC podcasters, especially those discussing topics like ED and body image. By supporting these creators, we empower them to share their experiences and perspectives with a wider audience. We help amplify their voices and increase their platform, which brings more awareness and education to societal issues.

Additionally, when we support creators from underrepresented communities, we contribute to a more diverse and inclusive media landscape, which benefits us all. Supporting black and BIPOC podcasters is not only a way to educate ourselves on important topics but also an act of solidarity toward marginalized communities.

Why Listening to Black Women, in particular, is Important:

Black women have historically been marginalized. We can go back to understanding that black women have been stereotyped all the way back to slavery and those ideas about us persist. When it comes to having information about body image, trauma, and disordered eating, what we often don’t understand unless we have this lived experience is how scarce information about the black experience is.

Why? Because when our voices are heard, we don’t often get the response to share out information, make changes, or get the support we need. What I know as a researcher is this, ED and body image research are severely lacking for black and BIPOC populations ( individual Asian, Indian, Native, Black, and Mixed populations among many others.)

So, while we work to improve this outreach and update the data, these wonderful individuals have shared their lived experiences to let us know, we are not alone. You are not alone, there are people who get it.

How Podcasts Can Help:

Listening to podcasts can have many benefits for Black and BIPOC women who are struggling with issues related to eating disorders, perfectionism, trauma, and body image. For example, podcasts can provide a sense of community and connection for individuals who may feel isolated or unsupported in their struggles.

They can also offer insights and guidance from experts, as well as stories and perspectives from individuals who have gone through similar experiences. According to a survey by Edison Research and Triton Digital, 23% of podcast listeners say they listen to podcasts to improve their mental health or well-being.

This highlights the potential impact that podcasts can have on addressing mental health concerns, particularly for Black and BIPOC women who may face unique challenges and barriers to accessing support.

Meet Jasmine

I have struggled with body image, binge eating, night eating, and emotional eating. I have gone through trial and error trying to find what works. No day is perfect still, but I have skills and a better self-image. I am a researcher by nature, I want to be able to understand and apply information to my own life. Truth be told, there are very few resources for Black and BIPOC women out there. Surprised?!

One thing I love is podcasts. There are wonderful and smart women out there who understand the same struggle and can share their stories, healing, and tips. I want you to have these resources to continue learning, growing, and healing. Recovery is possible. Don’t do this alone. Its not enough to cope, we need to understand and heal. Get support from a mental health professional and a recovery coach for ongoing support. Your spirit will thank you!
